The manufacturer's figures, not ours.

This one carries 624 Wh of battery. The maker quotes 78 mi; in mixed riding with some hills, expect nearer 59 mi. A full charge costs about £0.17. Across a year that is roughly £985.00 less than making the same journeys by car, so the bike pays for itself in about 14 months. Everything here is worked out from this bike's own specification. Estimates, not promises: the assumptions are printed underneath.

Seventy-eight miles on fat tyres, and road legal

The ENGWE L20 Boost claims a longer range than ninety-two percent of our catalogue, on four-inch tyres, from a 250W motor that stays inside UK road law.

Fat tyres usually cost range. Getting this figure out of them is the reason to look at this bike.

Seventy-five newton metres through twenty-inch wheels

Strong torque for a road-legal motor, and small wheels to give it leverage. It pulls away harder than the rating suggests, which on a heavy bike from a standing start is what you notice.

Assistance stops at the legal limit; past that the gearing is yours.

Wide tyres change what counts as a road

Four inches of tyre at low pressure turns gravel, wet grass, sand and broken tarmac into ordinary surfaces, and flattens the potholes on the way there.

They also work as suspension, which is why the ride stays comfortable without a rear shock.

Large rotors, on mechanical brakes

The discs are a hundred and sixty millimetres front and rear. A larger rotor gives more leverage and sheds heat better on a long descent.

They are cable-operated, so one Allen key adjusts them and a set of pads costs a few pounds anywhere, with nothing to bleed.

Aluminium, and it folds

A 6061 aluminium frame keeps the weight sensible for a bike on tyres this size, and it will not rust in a shed or under a cover.

Folded it goes in a car boot. At seventy-five pounds, treat the hinge as transport rather than a way to carry it.

Where the range comes from

Not from a large battery: the pack is around the lower middle of our catalogue. It comes from a 250W motor working within itself and small wheels that do not ask much of it.

The panel below turns the capacity into energy per mile, which is the fair way to judge how much of the seventy-eight mile claim you will actually see on fat tyres.

Engwe L20 Boost Fat Tire Electric Bike view 7

Six and a half hours to fill

An overnight job rather than something between two trips, which suits a bike with this much claimed range: you will rarely be charging from empty.

Topping up rather than running flat is what keeps a pack healthy past its second winter.

What to do before the first ride

It arrives largely assembled. Allow twenty minutes.

  • Unfold and lock the frame hinge and the stem
  • Fit the pedals and set the saddle height
  • Check both brakes and centre the calipers before a first descent
  • Set tyre pressure: soft for grip, firmer for range
  • Charge to full once before commuting on it

A weight limit in the lowest few per cent of our range

This is the catch, and it is an odd one on a fat-tyre bike. The rated payload is lower than almost every other bike we sell, which is not what the tyres imply.

Check the figure in the table below against your own weight plus whatever you carry, before you order rather than after. If you are near it, one of our higher-rated frames is the better buy and we would rather say so now.

Heavy, and the range is a ceiling

Seventy-five pounds is a bike you wheel rather than carry, folded or not, and stairs at both ends of a commute will wear on you.

Range figures are measured at the lowest assist level on flat ground, and fat tyres punish that harder than narrow ones do. The bands in the table below are the version to plan around. What stands is that it is strong for a 250W motor on fat tyres.

What about the electric scooters?
Those are different, and the law treats them differently. A privately owned e-scooter cannot legally be ridden on a public road, pavement or cycle lane in the UK, whoever sold it. We sell ours for private land use only, with the landowner's permission, and every scooter product page says so. If you want something you can ride to work, choose an electric bike.
