The manufacturer's figures, not ours.

This one carries 360 Wh of battery. The maker quotes 62 mi; in mixed riding with some hills, expect nearer 47 mi. A full charge costs about £0.10. Across a year that is roughly £986.00 less than making the same journeys by car, so the bike pays for itself in about 15 months. Everything here is worked out from this bike's own specification. Estimates, not promises: the assumptions are printed underneath.

Fifteen kilograms of carbon fibre with a torque sensor

The ENGWE N1 Air is a carbon fibre road bike at 34 lbs, which makes it one of the two lightest electric bikes we sell, at £1,169 from £1,899.

Road legal at 250W: no licence, no tax, no insurance, nothing to register.

Thirty four pounds is the whole argument

The average electric bike in our catalogue is around sixty five pounds. This one is half that, and only one bike we sell is lighter.

  • You can carry it up a flight of stairs
  • It goes on a car rack without a lifting strategy
  • It rides like a bicycle when the battery is flat, which most electric bikes do not
  • It fits through a doorway and up a hallway without the furniture suffering

If your life has stairs in it, this is the specification that decides everything else.

Carbon fibre, and what it actually does

A carbon frame with an aluminium fork. Carbon is not simply lighter than aluminium: it absorbs high frequency road buzz in a way metal does not, which is why it is what road bikes are built from.

That matters here because there is no suspension on this bike at all. The frame is the suspension.

A MIVICE motor with a torque sensor

A MIVICE M070 rear hub with a torque sensor and 40 Nm.

Forty newton metres is modest, and on a bike this light it does not need to be more. A torque sensor measures how hard you are pressing and scales the motor to match, so the bike feels like a bicycle you have become stronger on rather than a moped that switches itself on a second late.

MIVICE is a specialist motor maker rather than a house brand, and that is unusual at this price.

A hundred kilometres from ten amp hours

ENGWE quote 100 km at the lowest assist level from a 36 volt ten amp hour Samsung pack. Our figure is 62 miles.

Ten amp hours is a small battery, and that is the point: the bike is light enough not to need a big one. A heavy bike needs a heavy battery to move its own weight before it moves yours.

The pack is removable, so it charges on a desk rather than beside the bike, and the panel below turns it into energy per mile with the assist bands.

Seven hundred by thirty eight, on spoked wheels

700c wheels on 38 mm tyres: a road wheel with enough width for a canal path or a gravel track, and a size every shop in the country stocks.

A Shimano seven speed derailleur handles the gears, which matters because the motor stops helping at 15.5 mph and above that it is you and the gearing.

A solar tail light

A front light off the main battery, and a rear light that charges itself from daylight.

It is a small thing that removes a recurring annoyance: a rear light that is never charged when you need it. Nothing to plug in and nothing to remember.

Two frames, and the height each one fits

ENGWE build this in a crossbar and a step through frame, with slightly different geometry. Between them they cover riders from roughly 5ft 1in to 6ft 5in.

Saddle height runs from 82.5 cm to 95 cm and the bar adjusts between 105 cm and 112 cm, so there is real adjustment inside each size rather than one fixed position.

Before the first ride

It arrives in a compact box, about a metre and a half long.

  • Fit the front wheel, handlebar and pedals
  • Torque carbon fittings carefully: carbon does not forgive over tightening the way aluminium does
  • Set the saddle inside the 82.5 to 95 cm range
  • Check tyre pressure, which on a 38 mm tyre is higher than you may expect
  • Charge to full before the first long ride

Mechanical brakes and a low payload

The brakes are 160 mm mechanical discs rather than hydraulic, which on a thirty four pound bike is adequate but is where the money was saved.

The payload is 120 kg, lower than ninety six per cent of our catalogue. Rider plus a rucksack is fine; rider plus panniers plus a week of shopping is not what this frame is for.

Buy it for the weight, the carbon and the torque sensor, on roads and paths, carrying yourself. On that ground it is the nicest bike to ride that we sell under twelve hundred pounds.

What about the electric scooters?
Those are different, and the law treats them differently. A privately owned e-scooter cannot legally be ridden on a public road, pavement or cycle lane in the UK, whoever sold it. We sell ours for private land use only, with the landowner's permission, and every scooter product page says so. If you want something you can ride to work, choose an electric bike.
