The manufacturer's figures, not ours.

This one carries 624 Wh of battery. The maker quotes 47 mi; in mixed riding with some hills, expect nearer 35 mi. A full charge costs about £0.17. Across a year that is roughly £982.00 less than making the same journeys by car, so the bike pays for itself in about 13 months. Everything here is worked out from this bike's own specification. Estimates, not promises: the assumptions are printed underneath.

A kilowatt on a fat-tyre frame, for private ground

The ENGWE M20 carries a 1000W motor, four times the UK road limit. We sell it for private land only: ground you own, or ground where you have the owner's permission.

Not a road, not a pavement, not a cycle path. That decides the purchase, so it comes first.

Four-inch tyres on twenty-inch wheels

Wide tyres at low pressure turn sand, mud, wet grass and loose gravel into ordinary surfaces. The contact patch is large and the bike does not dart when the ground changes underneath it.

Small wheels give the motor more leverage, which is why a machine like this pulls away so hard.

Engwe M20 Moped Style Ebike view 3

Fifty-five newton metres, put down low

Torque is what keeps the wheel turning where the surface gives way. On a loose climb a weaker motor spins and stops; this one digs in.

Top speed is beside the point on private ground. Getting up the thing in front of you is not.

Aluminium, and heavy even so

The frame is 6061 aluminium, which is the only reason a machine with this motor and these tyres is not heavier still.

At seventy-seven pounds it is in the upper third of our range for weight. It also will not rust, which matters between sessions outdoors.

It carries a rider and a load

The rated payload leaves real headroom above an adult with a pack, which is what you want on a machine used for working ground rather than commuting.

Compare the figure in the table below with your own weight plus what you take with you.

Five hours to fill

Reasonable for a pack this size. Charge after a session rather than before one and it is always ready.

The panel below turns the capacity into energy and into what a charge costs. Even on a kilowatt motor, the socket cost is measured in pennies.

A modest battery behind a big motor

Thirteen amp-hours is around the lower middle of our catalogue, and a 1000W motor asked to work hard will empty it far quicker than a 250W one would.

The forty-seven mile claim assumes you are pedalling at low assist. The bands in the table below are the realistic version, and on this machine the gap between claim and reality is wider than most.

What to do before the first ride

It arrives largely assembled.

  • Fit the front wheel, handlebar and pedals
  • Check both brakes and test them at walking pace before using the power
  • Set tyre pressure low for soft ground, higher for hard-packed
  • Confirm you have somewhere private and lawful to ride it
  • Charge to full once before the first session

You cannot ride this on the road

A motor four times the legal limit is not an electrically assisted pedal cycle in the UK. It cannot be ridden on a public road, a pavement or a cycle path.

If you have the ground, this is a lot of torque for the money on a frame built to take it. If you do not, the battery is too small for long sessions and the machine is too illegal for short ones, and our 250W range is the right shelf instead.

What about the electric scooters?
Those are different, and the law treats them differently. A privately owned e-scooter cannot legally be ridden on a public road, pavement or cycle lane in the UK, whoever sold it. We sell ours for private land use only, with the landowner's permission, and every scooter product page says so. If you want something you can ride to work, choose an electric bike.
