Twenty-one gears and full-size wheels for under six hundred

The SAMEBIKE SY26-II is a proper bicycle shape: twenty-six inch wheels, a twenty-one speed Shimano drivetrain and an adjustable fork, at a price where most bikes are compact folders with a single gear.

The 250W motor keeps it road legal in the UK, and the claimed 56 miles is longer than half of what we sell.

Twenty-one gears is the specification that matters here

Three chainrings and a seven-speed cassette give you a gear for a loaded climb and a gear for a flat run, and everything between.

On an electric bike that is not redundant. Assistance stops at the legal limit, and past that the gearing is the only thing between you and pedalling a thirty-kilo bike in the wrong ratio.

Big wheels ride over what small wheels drop into

A twenty-six inch wheel meets a pothole at a shallower angle, so it rolls across the lip rather than falling in. On patched British tarmac and canal towpaths that is felt on every ride.

The tyres are a moderate width: enough tread for gravel, narrow enough not to drag on road.

A fork you can set to the ground

The front fork is adjustable, so it can be firmed up for tarmac or opened for a rough track rather than being one compromise forever.

There is no rear suspension. On a bike at this price that is the right place to spend and the right place to save.

A colour screen, which is rarer here than it sounds

The display is colour rather than the monochrome panel most bikes at this price carry, and it stays readable in daylight.

It shows speed, battery, distance and the assist level. That is the complete list of things anyone reads at fifteen miles an hour.

A thumb throttle for the awkward moments

Pulling away uphill from a standing start, or edging across a junction, is where a throttle earns its place. Five levels of pedal assist cover everything else.

You choose how much of the work stays yours, which is the point of an electric bike rather than a moped.

Steel, and simple to keep

The frame is high-carbon steel. It is heavier than aluminium, it takes knocks without denting, and it can be repaired anywhere.

Nothing on this bike is proprietary: the brakes, the chain, the cassette and the wheels are ordinary bicycle parts. Any shop in the country can service it without a dealer account.

Disc brakes, cable-operated

Front and rear discs, so rain does not take half your stopping distance away.

They are mechanical rather than hydraulic, which means occasional adjustment and a set of pads for a few pounds, done by you at the kerb if you like.

Charging fits an evening

Four to six hours from empty, so plugging in when you get home is the entire routine.

The panel below works out what a charge costs. It is measured in pennies, and it is what makes a bike this cheap to buy cheap to run as well.

What to do before the first ride

It arrives mostly assembled. Allow twenty minutes and the tool in the box.

  • Fit the front wheel, handlebar and pedals
  • Set the saddle so your leg is nearly straight at the bottom of the stroke
  • Check the gear indexing across all twenty-one ratios
  • Check both brakes and tyre pressure
  • Charge to full once before the first long ride

A weight limit in the lowest few per cent of our range, and it does not fold

Two honest limits. The rated payload is lower than almost every other bike we sell, so a heavier rider, or a lighter one with a loaded rucksack, is close to it before the ride starts. The figure is in the table below; check it against your own weight first.

And this does not fold. If you need to take a bike on a train or up to a flat, buy one of our folding models instead. What you get for accepting both is a full-size bicycle with twenty-one gears at a folder's price.

This one carries 468 Wh of battery. The maker quotes 56 mi; in mixed riding with some hills, expect nearer 42 mi. A full charge costs about £0.13. Across a year that is roughly £985.00 less than making the same journeys by car, so the bike pays for itself in about 7 months. Everything here is worked out from this bike's own specification. Estimates, not promises: the assumptions are printed underneath.
