The manufacturer's figures, not ours.

This one carries 960 Wh of battery. The maker quotes 60 mi; in mixed riding with some hills, expect nearer 45 mi. A full charge costs about £0.27. Across a year that is roughly £980.00 less than making the same journeys by car, so the bike pays for itself in about 24 months. Everything here is worked out from this bike's own specification. Estimates, not promises: the assumptions are printed underneath.

Four hundred pounds of payload, eighty six newton metres, road legal

The Himiway Big Dog is a cargo bike rated to carry 400 lbs, higher than ninety four per cent of our catalogue, with 86 Nm of torque, at £1,939.

Road legal at 250W: no licence, no tax, no insurance, nothing to register.

Do the subtraction before you order

Four hundred pounds is rider and cargo together, and the bike itself is eighty eight. Take your own weight off the four hundred and what is left is what the rack can hold.

For most people that is well over a hundred and fifty pounds of cargo, which is a week of shopping, two children, or a work load. It is the sum that decides whether a cargo bike can do your job, and it is the one people skip.

Eighty six newton metres, and why a cargo bike needs it

Torque is the pull. A loaded cargo bike starting on a hill is the hardest thing you can ask a 250W motor to do, and it is exactly the moment most of them give up.

Eighty six newton metres is near the top of what a road legal hub motor delivers, and on this bike it is not a specification line, it is the reason the thing works.

Integrated wheels rather than spoked ones

Both wheels are cast aluminium units rather than a rim laced to a hub with spokes.

  • No spokes to work loose under a heavy load
  • No wheel truing, ever
  • Stiffer under a long rear rack
  • Nothing to catch a strap or a child's foot

On a bike built to carry 400 pounds, the wheels are the part most likely to complain, and Himiway removed the complaint.

A low standover and a long seat range

Forty seven centimetres of standover, with the saddle running from 54.6 to 78.7 cm and a 71 degree head angle.

That is a bike you step onto rather than climb onto, and one that two adults of different heights can share without changing anything. On a cargo bike that gets loaded and unloaded twenty times a week, it matters daily.

Kenda Krusade fat tyres on twenty inch wheels

Twenty by four inches from a named tyre maker. A small wheel keeps the load low and the frame short; four inches of width puts a large contact patch under a heavy bike.

Low and wide is what stops a loaded cargo bike feeling like it wants to tip at walking pace.

Sixty miles, and hydraulic brakes

A 48 volt twenty amp hour pack quoted at 60 miles, with hydraulic discs.

On a bike that can be carrying four hundred pounds down a hill, hydraulic brakes are not an upgrade. One finger is enough and they do not fade.

The panel below turns the capacity into energy per mile. Remember that a loaded bike draws more than an empty one, and the bands are computed for the bike rather than the load.

A fork with lockout and preload

Both adjustments: preload for the weight you are carrying, lockout for when you are not.

A cargo bike's load changes every day, and a fork set for an empty bike is the wrong fork for a full one. Being able to change it in ten seconds is the difference between suspension that helps and suspension that wallows.

Before the first ride

It arrives largely assembled and at eighty eight pounds it is a two person unpack.

  • Fit the front wheel, handlebar and pedals
  • Bed the hydraulic brakes in at walking pace, then again with a load on
  • Set the fork preload for how you actually ride it
  • Set tyre pressure: firmer when loaded, softer when not
  • Charge to full once before the first long ride

Who should not buy it

Anyone with stairs, and anyone without somewhere at ground level to keep it. Eighty eight pounds before you load it is a bike that lives in a shed, a garage or a hallway.

It is also 180 cm long, so measure the space and the gateway before you order.

Buy it if you carry things regularly and want to stop using the car for it. A 400 pound rating with 86 newton metres and hydraulic brakes, all inside the law, is what makes that realistic rather than aspirational.

What about the electric scooters?
Those are different, and the law treats them differently. A privately owned e-scooter cannot legally be ridden on a public road, pavement or cycle lane in the UK, whoever sold it. We sell ours for private land use only, with the landowner's permission, and every scooter product page says so. If you want something you can ride to work, choose an electric bike.
