Samebike C05 Pro Review: Step-Through Fat Tyre E-Bike Tested

The Samebike C05 Pro is a step-through foldable fat tyre e-bike that costs £649 in the Biktron shop. That is a big saving on the £1,139 recommended retail price, but a low price only matters if the bike does the job.

This review does not claim hands-on testing. Instead we use the manufacturer's published specifications, UK e-bike law and the riding conditions you face every day to judge whether it is worth your money.

What is the Samebike C05 Pro?

The Samebike range is best known for budget-friendly folding and fat tyre electric bikes. The C05 Pro is a step-through city model, designed for easy mounting and short to medium commutes.

You can see the full Samebike C05 Pro page for the latest specifications and stock. The headline features are a 250W rear motor, a folding aluminium frame, 20-inch fat tyres and a quoted range of up to 47 miles.

It is a Class 1 e-bike under UK rules, meaning the motor only assists while you pedal and stops helping at 15.5mph. That makes it legal to ride on roads and cycle paths without a licence, tax or registration.

The bike measures roughly 170cm long and 110cm high when unfolded, and the handlebars fold down for storage. The step-through design means the top tube dips low, so you can step through the frame rather than swing a leg over.

Key specifications at a glance

  • 250W rear hub motor with pedal assist
  • 36V battery, quoted range up to 47 miles
  • 20-inch x 4.0 fat tyres
  • Step-through aluminium folding frame
  • Mechanical disc brakes
  • Shimano 7-speed gears

UK e-bike law and where the C05 Pro fits

The C05 Pro is an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC) under UK e-bike rules. That means the motor must be 250W or less and must not assist above 15.5mph.

Samebike quotes a 250W motor and a 15.5mph cut-off, so this bike meets the law. You can ride it on cycle paths and roads, and you do not need insurance, tax or a licence.

Riders must be 14 or over. Helmets are not a legal requirement in the UK, but RoSPA strongly recommends wearing one for every ride.

Because the C05 Pro is a step-through, it is often chosen by riders who want a very stable mount and dismount. That includes older riders, commuters with stiff knees and anyone carrying a bag on the rear rack.

Step-through frame and ride comfort

The frame has a low swooping top tube, so you just step through and sit down. There is no high crossbar to swing your leg over. That is easier when you wear office clothes or waterproof trousers.

The aluminium frame helps keep the weight down, but fat tyre e-bikes are never featherlight. Expect to lift around 25kg when you fold the bike or carry it up stairs.

The saddle is wide and padded, and the riding position is upright. That puts less strain on your wrists and lower back than a mountain bike crouch. For a 20-minute commute, it feels relaxed.

The C05 Pro has no front suspension fork, but the fat tyres and the wide saddle do much of the work. You still feel large potholes, but small cracks and cobbles are softened.

Who benefits most from a step-through?

Anyone with limited hip mobility will notice the difference. You do not need to tilt the bike or hike your leg high. It is also handy when you stop at traffic lights and want to put a foot down quickly.

If you wear a skirt or a long coat, a step-through frame is far more practical than a diamond frame. You can get on and off without worrying about snagging fabric.

Fat tyres and handling

The C05 Pro uses 20-inch wheels with 4.0-inch wide tyres. That width spreads your weight over a bigger contact patch, so you get extra grip on wet roads, gravel and the edges of towpaths.

Fat tyres also work as a form of suspension. At lower pressures they soak up small bumps, which helps because this bike has no front suspension fork.

On tarmac the wide tyres roll a little slower than a thin commuter tyre. The motor makes up for that, but you will notice it when the battery is off or you are pedalling without assist.

Keep the tyres around 20 to 30 psi. Softer than that feels plush but saps range. Harder than that reduces grip and comfort.

Tyres and terrain: what to expect

For riding on city streets and light trails, these tyres are a good match. They are not full mountain bike tyres, and you should avoid deep mud or rocky descents.

The fat tyres add stability at low speed, which is useful when you are filtering through traffic or pulling away from lights. They also make the bike less twitchy on loose surfaces.

Motor, battery and real-world range

The rear hub motor is rated at 250W, which is the legal maximum for a UK e-bike. It is not the most powerful hill climber, but it provides steady assistance up to 15.5mph.

Samebike quotes a range of up to 47 miles. That is a best-case figure on flat ground, in warm weather, with light pedal effort and low assistance.

In real UK conditions, expect around 25 to 35 miles. Hills, cold weather, stop-start traffic and the fat tyres all reduce range. You will still cover most urban commutes and leisure loops on one charge.

The C05 Pro has several pedal assist levels, so you can trade range for power. Use a low assist setting on flat routes and a higher one for hills or headwinds.

Some versions of this bike include a walk-assist mode that moves the bike slowly without pedalling. That is legal for walking alongside the bike, but a throttle that propels you at speed is not legal on UK roads.

Charging and battery care

The battery locks to the frame and can be charged on or off the bike. A full charge takes around 4 to 6 hours. In winter, bring the battery indoors before charging to protect its lifespan.

Do not leave the battery fully discharged for long periods. Charge it to about 60 per cent if you are storing the bike over winter, and top up before your first spring ride.

Folding, storage and commuting

The C05 Pro folds at the frame and handlebar stem. Folded, it is roughly the size of a large suitcase, but you should measure your car boot or hallway before buying.

Because the bike weighs about 25kg, folding is more about storage than carrying. It fits under a desk at work or in a cupboard at home, but you will not want to haul it up three flights of stairs every day.

For mixed-mode commuting, a folding e-bike can be handy. Sustrans has practical tips for cycling to work, including routes and what to carry.

If you need a lighter folding bike, the folding electric bikes category includes several alternatives. The C05 Pro trades some portability for fat-tyre stability.

Everyday controls, gears and brakes

The C05 Pro uses a simple LED display with buttons for power and assistance level. You can choose from several pedal assist modes or ride with the motor off.

It has Shimano 7-speed gears, which give you enough range for gentle hills and faster sections. The mechanical disc brakes provide predictable stopping power in the wet.

The controls are basic but clear. You do not need an app or a manual to start riding. Here is what you get:

  • LED handlebar display with battery indicator
  • Three or five assist levels, depending on the display version
  • Walk-assist mode on some UK models, but no high-speed throttle
  • Front and rear lights powered from the battery

Note: a throttle that propels the bike without pedalling is not legal on UK roads unless the bike is type-approved. This bike should be used in pedal assist mode.

Price, value and alternatives

At £649, the C05 Pro is one of the better value step-through fat tyre e-bikes on the market. The RRP of £1,139 makes the saving look large, but the real question is what you get for £649.

For comparison, the Samebike CY20 Pro costs £549 and is lighter, but it has smaller tyres and a less powerful feel. The Samebike LO26 Plus costs £849 and adds more battery capacity and a stronger frame.

Biktron includes a standard warranty on the C05 Pro, and the bike is easy to service at most local bike shops. Check the product page for the latest warranty details and delivery options.

For city use, the C05 Pro is a strong pick. For longer commutes or hilly areas, consider a model with a larger battery or a lighter frame.

Verdict: should you buy the Samebike C05 Pro?

If you want an affordable, legal, step-through e-bike with fat tyre grip and a folding frame, the C05 Pro is easy to recommend at £649. It is comfortable, simple to ride and well priced.

It is not the lightest folder, and the real-world range is closer to 30 miles than the quoted 47. For most city commutes and weekend leisure rides, that is still enough.
